Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such medications must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
